Designing products for the rail market is never easy, however PAUL CURTIS discusses some products that have made the grade

LPA Group PLC is a leading designer of electronic and electro-mechanical systems. They provide cost-effective solutions to improve reliability, reduce maintenance and hence reduce life cycle cost for the rail, aerospace, defence, marine and industrial markets throughout the world.

LPA companies are ISO 9000/2000 certified by the British Standards Institute and are committed to the highest standards of quality, reliability and service. LPA Group is also committed to environmental requirements and actively supports this through its business practices.

Exporting world-wide and with 100 years of growth and achievement in electro-mechanical assembly, design and engineering, the group has the experience and skills needed to meet the challenges of today’s demanding railway market.

When it’s got to be tough

The railway environment demands a lot of a product. With potential to be in use nearly all day every day and subject to all kinds of abuse from the elements and third parties, designing for the rail market is never easy. This, coupled with trying to achieve life cycles of 15 to 20 years, is why many companies’ standard products do not travel well to the railway environment. LPA Niphan knows this and ensures that this is considered in all they design, leading to products that meet these demanding requirements. Whether data or power you can be sure that LPA connectors will protect and connect for many years to come.

Saving time and money with LED lighting
LPA Excil Electronics (LPA) has designed, manufactured and supplied aesthetically pleasing, highly reliable and energy-efficient, fully rail and underground standard-compliant, LED-based solid-state lighting for passenger rail car interiors, in service in UK Europe and Asia for nearly eight years.

As LED technology has improved in terms of luminous efficacy and colour temperature, so LPA has developed its range of LED lighting products to offer train builders, refurbishers and maintainers opportunities to reduce maintenance, energy consumption, life cycle cost and environmental impact.

The luminous efficacy of LED lighting has improved to the extent that it is superior to both halogen and fluorescent and the white colour, once an inconsistent grey/blue is now available in predictable shades from cool white, through natural to warm white.

The key factors in LED lighting are appropriate drive electronics, effective thermal management and optimal use of LED light output. LPA has developed world-class expertise in all of these factors and can offer up to 15 years’ useful life from its LumiSeries® range of LED-based lighting products. Due to the absence of heavy metals such as mercury, on disposal LED products have an environmental advantage over fluorescent.

LumiSpot™
LED alternatives to halogen spots have been available from LPA for seven years. These LumiSpot™ products are configured either with a built-in power supply or to be driven by a central power supply where a broader application is required. These products are available in a choice of beam angles and colour temperatures to suit all applications.

LumiPanel®
LPA developed LumiPanel®, which replaces not only the fluorescent tube, but the entire luminaire and power supply in a panel only 20mm thick available in any length of 624mm and 1250mm modules. Lumipanel® weighs about 2kg less than a comparable fluorescent luminaire. LumiPanel™ delivers ten per cent more light output using up to 45 per cent less energy than a comparable fluorescent luminaire. Lumipanel® is ideal for new-build and retrofit where space and performance are key.

LumiStrip®
LPA, recognising that there is a requirement to re-utilise existing luminaires in maintenance upgrade and refurbishment situations, developed LumiStrip®, which replaces the fluorescent tube and its power supply. LumiStrip® is fixed directly to the back tray of the luminaire and is connected directly to the supply by passing the inverter, which together with the fluorescent tube mountings, being redundant can be removed. LumiStrip® utilises the existing diffuser and offers up to fifteen 27years’ useful life and up to 25 per cent energy saving compared with fluorescent. LPA Excil is currently supplying 20km of such LumiStrips for the new Sydney Metro.

Be safe in harsh environments
The latest generation LPA Niphan ‘Standard’ industrial plugs & sockets provides the highest levels of safety and performance in harsh environments. LPA Niphan guard ring plugs, flange sockets and trailing sockets are the totally ‘fit-for-purpose’ solution to carry out power supply connections in environments such as metro and underground railway tunnels, marine, military, rail, motor transport, defence, telecommunications, and process industries.

The LPA Niphan range of connectors is used in many ‘plug and play’ applications throughout rail infrastructure. Maintainable equipment can be rapidly swapped while providing a robust in service electrical connection. Manufactured in nickel-plated brass, LPA Niphan ‘Standard’ industrial plugs and sockets are IP66 rated and also provide the advantages of fire retardance, low smoke and toxicity, unique pin configurations and many other safety and performance features. They are also available from 5A to 250A, 500V and two-pole to 11-pole plus earth.

More than just a relay
LPA Channel has been working with Mors Smitt for over 15 years and together have built a solid reputation for being a quality relay supplier to the rail vehicle market. However the Mors range goes far beyond relays for rail vehicles and emcompasses a miriad of monitoring and measuring equipment aimed at supporting the rail infrastructure market.

Self detecting shuntbar
The self detecting shunt bar ZKL II, ensures a safe blocking of a track section, in order to protect construction and maintenance teams. The shunt bar is installed between the rails and simulates the presence of a train by providing short circuit. The electronic circuit continuously monitors the short circuit resistance. The short circuit is measured twice every second and upon a poor circuit the green LED stops flashing and an audio signal starts.

Features
  • Rigid construction
  • Quick and easy placement on the track
  • Complete with carrying case that checks an integrated self-test system and battery charger
  • Electronic monitoring of the presence of the short circuit
  • Warning (audio signal and LED stops flashing) when the short circuit is weak
  • Railway compliancy
  • Design, development and manufacturing according Cenelec SIL3.
NS1 signalling relays
The 24VDC instantaneous electro-mechanical vital relay is a trackside safety relay for the signalling railway market. It is a single module plug-in relay with positive mechanical keying, equipped with four normally open contacts and four normally closed contacts.
