Voith sets standards worldwide for papermaking technology, power transmission, energy technology, and
Voith was founded on January 1st, 1867. With approximately 30,000 employees, annual sales of 3.5 billion and over 200 locations worldwide, Voith is one of the
largest family-owned companies in Europe. Voith Turbo, the specialist for hydrodynamic drive, coupling and braking systems for road, rail and industrial applications, as well as for ship propulsion systems is a Group Division of Voith.
The market area rail is the specialist for drive and cooling systems, control technology and Scharfenberg® couplers. There is hardly a freight or passenger train
in the world that does not drive with us. With the Maxima®, Voith now also offers a
complete locomotive – and has evolved from a components to a vehicle supplier.
Components, drive systems or complete vehicles, higher speeds, more comfort or
lower noise emissions: with our systems competence that has grown over decades,
we have the individual solution for every task, however complex and challenging it
may be. And we assume full responsibility for it – on the rails of the world.
System solutions – Voith-Powerpacks®
Transmission components are assembled in accordance with customer requirements to form a ready-to-install and tested drive system, which is commonly referred to as
the Voith-Powerpacks®. Simple integration of systems in the vehicle, adaptation to technical interfaces, comprehensive electronic control and monitoring as well as
the important matter of ease of maintenance are of utmost priority here. Voith offers three drive solutions – Shortpack®, Railpack® & Turbopack®. Here in the UK the Voith Turbopack® is in operation on the First Transpennine Class 185 DMU fleet. These units have been in service since March 2006 and are providing a reliable service.
Hydrodynamic drives for rail vehicles
Voith turbo transmissions and turbo reversing transmissions are successfully in
service all over the world. Gear-shifting processes – such as speed changes and reversing – are carried out by filling and draining the hydraulic circuits. With turbo
reversing transmissions, the converter for the opposite driving direction acts as a
hydrodynamic brake. Voith turbo reversing transmissions are individually optimised to suit their special applications.
The Voith Turbo T 211 re.4 is the latest development of its T 211 hydraulic transmissions up to 350kW controlled by VTDC (Voith Turbo Drive Control). This
transmission is widely used in diesel railcars and special vehicles throughout the UK and is available with optional hydrodynamic retarder (brake) and power take-off.
Voith cooling systems have been operating reliably in mainline and shunting locomotives, railcars, and high-speed trains worldwide for 55 years. The high quality of our products is based on the constant exchange of experience with vehicle, engine, and driveline manufacturers and on our knowledge of the characteristics of
different climatic zones. New cooler groups are currently being provided to First Great Western for inclusion in the reengineering of their HST power cars to complement their new MTU engines.
Voith Turbo Scharfenberg
A company with a long tradition and a worldwide reputation The Scharfenberg® (Schaku) coupler has developed into one of the most important and successful coupling systems in the history of railways since its invention and introduction in 1903. Scharfenberg stands for an internationally recognized brand name and market leader in railway transport. More than 300,000 couplers supplied worldwide provide evidence of Scharfenberg's market lead.
This leading international position was achieved by the intensive development of and continuous enhancement to our products. The new one4® coupler head is revolutionising the way that train operators view maintenance. With its removable front plate giving greater access to the operating mechanisms it is proving to save time and money as well as reducing lead times for new couplers and spare parts alike.
Aftermarket sales & support
All this is complemented by the aftermarket sales and service here in the UK & Ireland. This is carried out by Voith Turbo Ltd at its Sales and Service centre in Hayes, Middlesex, where it has comprehensive facilities covering all aspects of the rail products mentioned above. Field service personnel cover the UK & Ireland with
extensive expertise ready to advise and assist competently and reliably. These are
reinforced by our team of staff in our service support role and remanufacturing unit within Hayes itself. This unit has full facilities for the overhaul and testing of all of the Voith rail product range, and has gained a reputation for the quality of its work, operating to recognised quality standards including ISO 9001:2000, GMRT
2450, GMRT 2470 and GORT 3260.
All of this in turn is based upon a foundation of research, development, engineering and design at our parent locations in Heidenheim and Salzgitter in Germany and further complemented by aftermarket sales and service from these locations. The majority of the rail fleets in the UK & Ireland are already enjoying unrivalled support from Voith on our full product run.
