As part of the ongoing development of large structural applications in advanced composites (GRP), Access Design has developed, in conjunction with major consultants and Network Rail, a modular GRP railway station platform for use on new stations or platform extensions to accommodate the new longer trains.
Recognising the need to reduce track possession time and to speed assembly, Access Design has designed the support structure to be completely prefabricated off site. The decking panels offer a clear span of 4000mm between the supports therefore less civil work on the foundations is required – again adding to speed of installation and lessening track possessions.
This GRP Modular Railway platform system comprises of a series of long span (up to 4000mm) interlocking planks with superb anti-slip properties and all the required tactiles and marking lines.
The deck system has concealed fixings from the underside thus the top surface is free from fixing holes. The GRP hollow core deck panels can also be used as cable tracks. A variety of GRP front litter screens and GRP rear fencing can be incorporated into the structure.
The entire system (which has patent applied status) has been independently tested to Network Rail load criteria and has a generic Form A in place together with a Cat 111 design check and a standard for platform construction
These platforms are currently being extensively used on the Windsor Lines and negotiations for further work packages are well advanced. They are assisting contractors by reducing timescales and plant requirements especially in areas where access and storage of materials is challenging.
