Do you think your cables and metal assets are safe?

People who are desperate for income will go to extreme measures to gain access to your assets, including metal and plant. In one case, Triforce has been successful in reducing cable theft to zero in a seven-month period
Anyone working in the security business knows that each environment can require a mixture of techniques in order to reduce the risk of trespass, theft and vandalism. Rail, being one of the most challenging environments, is no exception.
Operating across the UK, Triforce currently delivers security services to major infrastructure providers. Notably, the company has successfully reduced active cable theft on the Underground network in a very short period of time. Triforce uses specialist techniques and equipment, coupled with experienced teams, to provide a range of counter-measures designed to thwart or capture offenders bent on removing assets from the rail environment.
What is the issue?
Triforce works closely with the British Transport Police to combine a simple secure model of asset protection, and more importantly, the company works with its clients to ensure awareness of cable and metal theft in the surrounding communities. Protecting a client’s brand and reputation is the priority. Triforce understands the knock-on effect of assets going missing; the impact on their business is substantial:
We hear more and more stories of metal theft in and around rail networks. Given that we are moving towards the 2012 Olympics and need our movement around the country to be smooth and straightforward, what seems such a small problem does ultimately have a huge impact. If metal theft awareness and security was at the head of the engineering agenda the prevention tools would already be in place.
Where is the threat coming from?
Triforce currently manages a large contract with a client whose work includes upgrading the Underground network. Throughout the work, there are many kilometres of copper cable exposed and vulnerable to thieves. Since the beginning of the year, on other lengths of track in the area, there have been 27 reported cases, or actual thefts, and there have been multiple arrests. Triforce has been looking after particular lengths of track for seven months and has successfully prevented numerous attempts of metal and asset thefts throughout this period.
Copper is at a record high in value, and is over £6000 per tonne (May 2011). Triforce has teams on the ground that carry out over watch and surveillance. They carry out fence line and access point patrols and remain vigilant to signs of theft. Criminals who have access to the surrounding areas are able to continually scope out stretches of cable and work very quickly to enter those areas and cause damage.
What current tactics are being used? Why is Triforce different?
There are a number of tactics being deployed:
What is the impact of these tactics?
Even with awareness and tactics in place, metal and asset theft is still on the rise and will continue to do so unless a combination of security tactics is implemented and maintained. Theft skills are improving, along with a greater understanding of the infrastructure, the response times of security and police, and ever more devious ways of disposing of the assets to earn money. Even a slight reduction of security in one area enables the theft to increase again. Continuing the processes throughout are vital to the success of theft prevention.
What we do that is different – why use Triforce?
As well as working with its clients and the police to maximise the impact of media and awareness campaigns, Triforce is able to use security professionals who are skilled, motivated and determined to prevent metal theft in the areas we are designated.
The difference with Triforce’s people is that they are determined to stop metal theft happening; they understand their clients and their businesses, and the loss impact to them. The progression of a project is vital to all clients and Triforce protects their projects to ensure their success. In the long term the budgetary impact is under their control.
For obvious commercial reasons Triforce cannot go into current successful projects in depth, but in a seven-month period, where other installers and other security providers have continued to lose metal and other assets, Triforce has managed to maintain a zero loss record. In fact, not only has the company achieved this, but they have also actually added value by assisting the police in arresting associated criminals, such as drug dealers and other petty crime. Triforce has cleaned up these areas and deterred further crime in local residential areas by mobilising and patrolling its watch teams.
