For over 35 years Premier Pits have been making a significant contribution to improving vehicle workshop costs, efficiency and safety. They now believe similar benefits can be experienced by the rail industry. Over the 35 years a wide product range has been created and developed, including under-chassis washing pits for commercial vehicles

Premier Pits have recently installed many under-chassis wash pits.

A majority of the units have been for manual washing within the truck and bus sectors, however, Premier Pits believe these could also work effectively in railway wash hall facilities. In an increasingly demanding health and safety environment, under-chassis washing for all classes of vehicles, including trains, is essential.

The wash pits, designed and manufactured by Premier Pits near Spalding, Lincolnshire, are fully hot-dipped galvanized. Lights and pressure water pipes are fitted prior to arriving on site, which all helps to give considerable on-site installation time savings. The pressure water pipe runs the full length of the pit with a quick release point for the lance to be released when not in use.

Automatic under-chassis washes generally require a sump of some form to accommodate the equipment. These sumps are mostly formed in situ concrete, which requires extra time on site for drilling and fit out.

Additionally, automatic washes are only 80 per cent to 90 per cent efficient; this compares with the 100 per cent wash provided by manual washing with a lance. A combined auto/ manual chassis wash is available as an alternative.

Premier Pits’ wash down units are manufactured to any specified length, usually bolted together to provide a complete watertight unit. To further reduce fit-out time on site, any brackets that may be required as well as specified fittings, can be built in at the factory,

All products within the range are manufactured in the UK to rigorous design standards, including full structural calculations, and are fully hot-dipped galvanized to
BS EN ISO 1461:2009.

In summary, Premier Pits’ prefabricated wash down pits can significantly reduce installation costs and times. The prefabricated sump itself reduces site time by 80 per cent compared to in situ poured concrete. In addition they reduce on-going maintenance costs, improve wash down quality and efficiency, and provide safer and healthier working conditions for staff.
