MGB Signalling has extended its range of services after being awarded its provisional principal contractors licence, an essential and important step in enabling the business to offer full design and construction services to the UK rail industry.

The company, formerly known as Magnate Grey Box Ltd, has evolved from providing signalling equipment housings to being Link-up approved for signalling design, installation, testing & commissioning, and for the supply of professional services and labour for signalling works. It is also certified to ISO 9001:2000 and has been recognised as an Investor in People.

MGB was the result of two people's passion for providing a service to the rail industry that was 'Clearly Different'. Peter Foxley had already formed Magnate Associates Ltd. to exploit weaknesses in the supply and control of materials used in rail signalling projects and Stuart Morrison was closely involved with the rail industry through his own companies, Western Electrical Ltd. and Western Rail Services Ltd. They believed it was possible to create a growth company that would service a gap in the market by providing cost-effective engineering solutions which would act as a bridge between the equipment provided by technology providers and the requirements of rail infrastructure owner/operators. They also believed that such a company would be prepared to face the challenge set by the Office of Rail Regulation to reduce the base costs of the rail industry and to make rail projects more affordable.

Consequently, Magnate Grey Box Ltd was incorporated in 2004 combining the railway expertise of Magnate Associates Ltd. with the materials and logistics expertise of Western Electrical Ltd. Magnate Grey Box Ltd changed its name to MGB Signalling Ltd (MGB) in March 2008 to more accurately reflect the core business of the company, which was started as, and remains, a privately financed enterprise.

Four years of trading history have seen MGB grow to a turnover in excess of £7 million with 80 staff. The company has moved to new headquarters in Plymouth's prestigious Tamar Science Park and opened new facilities in York and Glasgow, which also houses the MGB training school providing a wide range of technical and safety training courses. Manufacturing is undertaken in a separate facility in Plymouth and in Glasgow.

There is a construction base in Lichfield which is also home to subsidiary company, MGB Resourcing. Sister company, MGB Thailand, was established in 2007 to recruit local graduates as signal engineers. The company provides design and engineering support to MGB, easing any burden on resources.

Stuart Calvert joined the company in February 2008 as managing director and is very excited by the prospects for the company and the benefits it can bring to its clients:

“We have listened very carefully to our clients and have designed our processes so thatwe can be flexible and adaptable whilst maintaining a high quality of product and service.”
