Mirror Technology Ltd has mainly been supplying the rail industry with DOO platform mirrors but, in the railway environment there are a variety of other valuable uses for safety and security mirrors. Stations are often unmanned, with dark corners and tunnels. Apart from the improved visibility, mirrors are a visual deterrent to a potential assailant.
For tunnels and enclosed passageways, wide-angle units placed at T-junctions allow a view in both directions. This type of mirror is also very suitable for stairwells in multi-storey car parks etc. where the mirror can usually be placed out of harm’s way.
For pathways and lanes around the station there are a variety of products from many manufacturers that will give passengers a good view of the general area. For this application a rectangular mirror can be useful with its wider sight.
Station car parks are often small and relatively isolated. Mirrors can help both in easier parking and to give a sense of security to drivers, especially when there are small children around, often the case during the morning rush hour.
It is worth considering suitable materials for each mirror. Glass is optically good but prone to breakage. Acrylic gives similar viewing properties but is substantially stronger and lighter. In areas prone to vandalism there are two good solutions. Polycarbonate plastic is almost unbreakable but it is a soft material and easily scratched. It should be used only where the damage risk is high. A good alternative is stainless steel. This is now available with an excellent mirror lens and of course is very robust. This type is very suitable for all general uses.
Mirror Technology has recently added Trixi type cycle lane mirrors to its range. These provide a clear view of these lanes to lorry drivers at traffic lights. They could be a useful safety point where cycle lanes run past urban stations.
All the above products are generally available and offer increased safety and a feeling of security at very low expense.
