Over the course of 23 years, NightSearcher Ltd has established a reputation within the rail industry and is synonymous with the supply of professional portable lighting solutions

Last year, NightSearcher brought about a breakthrough in LED-powered floodlighting with the development of its NightSearcher Solaris Lite 6K unit – pushing the boundaries of the latest technology to finally offer a lightweight rechargeable alternative to P/way gangs using 500W halogens operating from a generator. The newest version weighs only 5.6kg yet illuminates the same area as a 500W halogen head – the Solaris head, however, has 18 high-power CREE LEDs to deliver a glare and shadow-free white light. The rechargeable Li-ion battery brings an end to noise pollution, carbon emissions; it runs cool, making it totally safe for any environment.

The close working partnership that NightSearcher forms with customers enables them to be involved at every stage of the design process; the resulting product will have been based on the specifications set out for their individual application. It’s this level of involvement that secured NightSearcher’s invitation to Network Rail’s in-house exhibition at Westwood last year and it was here they were approached for a high-power lighting solution for OHL night-time patrolling activities.

NightSearcher was faced with some major hurdles during this project, not least was the minimum running time needed to cover an eight-hour shift on full power! By keeping the design and manufacture of their products based in the UK helped the company evolve this new product faster as changes could be made as soon as the feedback was fed through to its in-house R&D department ensuring it could be brought to market quickly, and ultimately win the tender.

The final stage of development was storage of the Panther for transit, which was much easier as they already use B&W cases for the Solaris range. The cases can cope with the most arduous conditions and come with an unlimited lifetime guarantee ensuring years of hassle-free service and gave enough room to store the Panther torch, mains charger, car charger and back-up flashlight for a complete kit.

With over six months active service it’s been CAT numbered and is available from Unipart Rail using part number 0111/103516.
